Trump has already signed two executive orders to move forward with construction of the controversial Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines.
Both pipelines have been the subject of huge protests over the past few years. The protest at Standing Rock in North Dakota drew international media attention – as people were shot with teargas and water guns in below-freezing temperatures.
Now, North Dakota is even trying to pass a law to make it so that drivers can “accidentally” hit and kill protesters.
Native American tribes and climate activists have vowed to fight the pipelines “for a lifetime,” if necessary.
Here’s what they’re saying:
- “Americans know this pipeline was unfairly rerouted towards our nation and without our consent. The existing pipeline route risks infringing on our treaty rights, contaminating our water and the water of 17 million Americans downstream.”
- “I’m staying here. I’m standing with the natives. This is our future,” said Benjamin Buffalo, 45, a Blackfeet tribal member from Browning, Montana. “I disagree with what Trump did because he’s ruining the future for our children.”
