After the election, the “alt-right” became famous for its white supremacist views – because one of the leaders of the racist movement was nominated to be Trump’s chief White House strategist and senior counselor.
A quick reminder: the alt-right opposes immigration, feminism, and multiculturalism. Online, they are known for harassing Jews, Muslims, and other minority groups, with headlines like:
- “Hoist It High and Proud: The Confederate Flag Proclaims a Glorious Heritage”
- “Birth Control Makes Women Unattractive and Crazy”
- “Gabby Giffords: The Gun Control Movement’s Human Shield”
Some are trying to defend the choice of Bannon for such an important White House role – saying that Bannon actually isn’t a racist. Bannon himself claims to not be a proponent of white supremacism.
Unfortunately, this feels a little too late. Bannon’s already been called a “vindictive, nasty figure… a nightmare” and “terrifying man.”
Republicans keep trying to make it seem like the choice of Steve Bannon is an unconventional but ultimately acceptable choice.
It absolutely isn’t.
