Trump held the first press conference he’s had since mid-2016. In it, he shouted at reporters and refused to answer questions from outlets that he didn’t like.
He called CNN “fake news,” another news outlet a “pathetic pile of garbage,” and attacked a reporter that tried to ask a question without being called on.
Apparently, Turkey’s leader loves what Trump’s doing. He’s the same Turkish president known, of course, for cracking down on freedom of the press, making Turkey into the world’s biggest jailer of journalists—with 81 reporters currently behind bars.
Even China only has 38 reporters behind bars.
Russian journalists mocked the United States:
“Congratulations, US media! You’ve just covered your first press conference of an authoritarian leader with a massive ego and a deep disdain for your trade and everything you hold dear.”
In Russia, journalists are more likely to be replaced by more obedient figures – or even to be murdered.
Since 2000, when Putin rose to power, 35 journalists at least have been killed in the country.
So as it turns out, we’re really just following the lead of other countries that have slowed but slowly sucked away the public’s right to know what’s going on it their own nation. We’re making freedom of thought impossible by reducing freedom of speech.
We’d better keep Trump in check to make sure that’s not our future.
