Trump said Americans “don’t care at all” about seeing his tax returns. But he’s definitely wrong about that.
Trump tried to dismiss reporters asking about his tax returns today, claiming that “the only ones” who care about them are the reporters – that the American public is totally uninterested in his finances.
He continued, “I won; I mean, I became president. No, I don’t think they care at all. I don’t think they care at all. I think you care.”
Polls have consistently shown that, actually, a majority of Americans do want to know what’s in Trump’s tax records.
60% of people believe Trump has a responsibility to public release those tax records.
There are obviously reasons he’d want to keep his taxes hidden. There would be information in the returns about Trump’s business dealings and his financial background in detail.
When a reporter tried to mention that presidents have released their tax returns since the 1970s, Trump cut her off, saying, “Oh, gee, I never heard that.”
